Syndrome X book By Dr. Sandra Cabot

What is Syndrome X?

A Syndrome is a cluster of symptoms found in one patient that characterize a condition.

Syndrome X is such a cluster. The symptoms and conditions that occur together to characterise Syndrome X include:

  • Insulin resistance
  • High levels of the hormone insulin
  • Abnormalities in blood fats
  • A variety of blood glucose abnormalities
  • There may also be high blood levels of uric acid
  • High blood pressure may be present
  • Weight excess especially in the abdominal area

Professor Reaven’s research team first recognised that people with insulin resistance and high blood levels of the hormone insulin have an elevated risk of heart disease. Reaven also found that a high carbohydrate diet could raise the insulin levels and thus the risk of heart disease. Professor Reaven called Syndrome X the “metabolic syndrome” which is seen in people who are insulin resistant. Although Syndrome X is usually associated with weight excess, it can also be found in non-obese, non-diabetic persons.

It is not essential to have all the symptoms to be diagnosed with this Syndrome.
